Types of Kennel Flooring

Most of the kennel flooring that you can buy these days is relatively cheap, or at least it is definitely affordable, and well worth the cost, I think, if it gets your dog up off the ground! The cheapest type of flooring you can buy is mesh wire flooring. I don't really like that so much as it does not seem that it would be very comfortable for a dog. I think it is great to use in a temporary pen, for example, but not as more permanent kennel flooring.

Some dog owners like to use it, especially if they are breeding dogs, as it allows any mess to go straight through the mesh and flooring, onto usually a tray that is kept underneath. I suppose if you have a need like that it would be good to have that available.

Rubber tiling or rubber matting can also be bought online fairly cheaply. It is really comfortable for a dog to rest on and pretty easy to clean. If you buy rubber matting, make sure that it does not absorb any moisture though, or you will end up with pretty smelly rubber mats after a while. Also, if you have any little pups they can really worry away at a corner piece and do some big chew damage if you are not careful! I have seen it happen!

Buy Kennel Flooring Online

If you check online you will soon see that there are many portable floors for your kennel available. Most pet stores stock them, and they're also very easy to find on Amazon or eBay, for example. Some of the benefits to using portable kennel flooring is that if you move, you can take it along with you. They are also usually really easy to put in the kennel, most don't really take any installation actually at all, you just stick them inside the kennel (make sure you measure your kennel first though and buy the right sized flooring!)

They are also much more comfortable for your dog than having him lay on either hard cement or worst still, on the cold, damp floor. Finally, you'll find that they are also really easy to clean. You can either leave them in the kennel and sluice them down or hose them off, or if they are really dirty you can bring them out of the kennel and give them a good scrubbing then leave them to dry in the sun. It couldn't be easier, now could it?

In fact, I think that instant kennel flooring is perfect for any dog kennel, and especially important if your dog spends a lot of time in an outdoor dog pen. Most of the flooring can be laid directly over the grass. Some of it needs to be attached to the ground (usually through little pegs that go through grommets in the flooring material. If the kennel flooring is heavy enough though, you can usually simply place it directly on the ground.

Kennel Flooring Suggestions

Dog owners often seem to be a bit confused when it comes to figuring out what type of flooring to put in their kennel. Should they put anything there, lay cement, put in wooden flooring (not a good idea, incidentally), or buy mats. Well there are many different options for kennel flooring, though as you know if you've spent any time reading this blog, my personal preference is kennel decking. I won't enumerate all the reasons for this, as I already have done so plenty, and if you want to find out why I like it better than other options just read the rest of my posts :-)

If you are setting up big, permanent kennels then concrete flooring is an option of course. But if you do happen to put cement down be prepared to go the extra mile and actually seal it with something too. Cement is porous and urine or any other liquid will soak down into it, causing it to smell after a while.

If you are living in a rented house, or you are fairly certain you will be moving around, you should probably consider buying or building something that you can take along with you, including the kennel and getting some form or portable kennel flooring as well.

Why Portable Kennel Flooring

If you ever travel with your dogs, or take them on vacation, or even if you are the sort of person that loves to work in the yard and landscape, I think you will agree with me that having a portable kennel and thus portable kennel flooring is a great idea.

There are times, perhaps relating to the seasons for example, when you may want to move your dog kennel from one location to another. We normally have our kennel on the other side of the garage, for example, where we don't have to hear all the whines, and the occasional barking so much. But when our dog was about ready to whelp we were very pleased that we could move the whole kennel set up closer to the home so that we could keep a better eye on her, and then on her and her puppies once they were born. She seemed to like being closer to us too, I think it made her more secure.

We also like the option of being able to move our kennel around in bad weather. We get terrible rainstorms here sometimes, it gets dangerously windy though not as bad as a cyclone, thank goodness. In any case, whenever there's a big storm blowing in we usually move the kennel around the sheltered side of the garage and have, on occasion, actually moved the whole kennel into the garage to shelter the dogs from the storm.

If you go to all the trouble of making your kennel somewhat portable or at least make it so you can relocate it, you may as well invest in portable kennel flooring as well. There are lots of different types of flooring that could be considered portable. My personal favorite happens to be kennel decking, but of course there are other options too.

Kennel Decking

Kennel decking is a great option if you need something portable to keep in the floor of your kennel. It is compact, hardy, fairly lightweight and comes in specifically sized pieces. Of course, you should make sure when you buy it that you measure your kennel area first so you know how much kennel decking to get. It is hard to trim it, so if they don't have something exactly the right size, you are almost better off getting something a little smaller and then using another material to fill in the gaps.

The nice thing about kennel decking, too, is that it raises your dog up off the ground. This is great, especially in winter when laying on the cold hard earth can be quite uncomfortable for your dog. It's also a lot easier to keep your dog clean when it is raised up off the ground too--no more laying around in mud!

Most of the kennel decking you buy is made from hard plastic, or PVC type material. This makes it extremely easy to clean, you just have to hose or spray it off, or if really dirty you can give it a good scrub with a scrub brush. Because it is very hardy, it is also great if you have a dog that loves to chew things. I've actually had a dog that chewed up her entire kennel (made from wood, with plastic roofing) or at least all the little parts that stuck out. She was never able to get ahold of the kennel decking though :-)
